Improvements Needed

The following is an incomplete list of space4cycling improvements needed. Most of them have appeared in council plans for decades (with great names like CIF, KLATS, KLyMaD, KLURS or the Hunstanton Masterplan) without ever being built. It's time to stop just making plans and start building them!

King's Lynn

  1. Cycle Hire in the town centre: shop, dock or delivery based.
  2. Tennyson Road level crossing improvement - possibly walking/cycling bridge reinstatement (costed during electrification?)
  3. Cycleway connection across the Docks level crossing between the Bawsey Drain Path and the town centre 20mph zone, as part of a longer infill cycleway along the east side of the A1078 from Edward Benefer Road to the Lidl supermarket in Norfolk Street
  4. Connect the cycleways across the cut bridge (various costs were cited to the cycle forum by NCC delegates over the years, so they must exist)
  5. A safe two-way cycle route connection via Tuesday Market Place across the town centre (Norfolk Street was part of CIF2 - but other routes possible)
  6. "Except Cycles" from the no-entries on Guanock Terrace, Norfolk Street and King Staithe Square
  7. Crossing London Road from Millfleet to the Walks (costed for CIF2)
  8. Hardings Way completion and safety measures (costed for CIF2)
  9. Extension of cycleway from West Lynn to start of 30mph zone west of Millennium Way, then centre line removal and 2x2m cycle lanes to the 20mph zone.
  10. A47 Hardwick Junction cycleway rebuilt to standard and completion of Hardwick Road cycleways: westbound between McDonalds and Horsleys Chase; eastbound between Southgates roundabout and Beech Road.
  11. Re-open Tower Street to two-way cycling
  12. Remove crash hazard narrow barriers from cycleways, including on the riverside path, Wootton Park, Gaywood Hall Park and Seagate Road
  13. Improvements to some of The Walks junctions - St John's, St James and Extons Road (costed as part of the Walks Heritage Lottery Fund project?)
  14. Expand default 20mph zone to the whole of Lynn (see
  15. A safe crossing of the A149 Lynn bypass to the east of the town (signalise QEH crossing, Knights Hill bridge and Sandy Lane surfacing, or otherwise - possibly costed during KLMD aka Hardwick supermarkets, but I don't think so) - could be part of the Lynn and Fakenham Greenway project
  16. Improve Wootton Road between Queen Elizabeth Avenue and Grimston Road: wide cycle lanes and centre line removed.
  17. All-weather tarmac link from Gaywood River Lane to Riverside
  18. Tarmac remaining dirt section of Friars Walk and connect to Southgates cycleways
  19. Tarmac Gaywood Swan Lane
  20. Vancouver Avenue/Goodwins Road/Tennyson Road all 20mph, "bicycle street" north of Avenue Road, widen the connection to Beech Road
  21. Connect the south end of Edward Benefer Way cycleway to Loke Road
  22. Columbia Way "bicycle street" between Loke Road and St Augustine's, then tarmac the track to Greenpark Avenue
  23. Link the Hardwick Industrial Estates and along the former railway to West Winch, Saddlebow Industrial Estate and the Great Ouse Path
  24. Connections through Hillington Square
  25. Cycleway from Sandy Lane to Knight's Hill
  26. Light unlit eastern half of Bawsey Drain Path
  27. Short link from Reffley Path to Reffley Shops
  28. Park and Pedal

West Norfolk

  1. Remedial work of the unsafe QE Hospital Roundabout crossings (install zebra+cycle or a toucan?) and build and sign a safe link to Bawsey Country Park
  2. Build a Heacham-Snettisham link: probably upgrade (widen and resurface) footway on west side of A149 into a cycleway - possibly part of the Lynn and Hunstanton Greenway project?
  3. Complete the Downham Market Ring Cycleway and sign it
  4. Build Downham Market / Denver Hill Expansion Green Infrastructure before houses are occupied
  5. Build the "Short Trees Cycleway" along the A148 between Church Lane Roydon and Roydon Road Castle Rising
  6. Create East Winch Connections alongside the A47 between East Winch Road Blackborough End and Gayton Road; and between Station Road and Walton Road to avoid westbound cyclists needing to turn right across the A47 twice
  7. Improved Link between Hunstanton and the Norfolk Coast Cycleway
  8. Build the Gaywood Valley Link and Osier Marsh route
  9. Extend National Cycle Route 1 riverside path from Tail Sluice to Fallowpipe Lane, then St Germans
  10. South East King's Lynn Green Infrastructure
  11. Cycleways alongside the Denver Waterways
  12. Hunstanton Expansion Green Infrastructure
  13. Link and sign Hunstanton Oasis Way to Cliff Top
  14. Build and sign Hunstanton Masterplan Cycleways 1-5 (NCC allocated funding in 2008 - what happened?)
  15. Drainage Channel Cycleway

Lincolnshire / South Holland

  1. Widening of entrance barriers on the Walpole Bank Cycleway and removal of slaloms
  2. Formalisation of how to cross Sutton Bridge, with signs and surface repairs
  3. Centre line removal and 2x2m cycle lanes on B1359 between Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton, or creation of cycleway alongside
  4. Widening of the crossing between Gedney Churchgate and Chapelgate, and a short cycleway bypass between the two parts of the B1359 to avoid using the A17 roundabout
